Green algae live
predominantly in freshwater areas. They can often be found on rocks, floating wood,
and covering the surface of stagnant water. In fact, algal growth is often what
makes partially submerged rocks and wood slippery. Green algae contain
photosynthetic chemicals in the same proportion as many terrestrial plants; for that
reason, many scientists believe that land plants evolved from certain types of green
algae. Many species are also important food and oxygen sources for freshwater
ecosystems.
