Zooplankton are essentially microscopic animals.  They serve several purposes in the Bay.  First, they are food for many larger organisms, such as fish.  Zooplankton also are used as an indicator of the overall state of the Bay; a healthy zooplankton population is generally reflective of a healthy Bay.
