NOTICE TO BOATERS
Notice to Boaters
Susquehanna River
Harford County
The Department of Natural Resources has received a request to
extend the current 6-knot (6.9 MPH) speed limit Saturdays, Sundays and State
holidays on a section of the Susquehanna River beginning at Red Buoy #18
extending 700 yards north to an area including all the waters from Red Buoy #18
to the Amtrak railroad bridge and the width of the river effective all year.
The petitioner is requesting this action based on his belief that such a
restriction is necessary to ensure safety. The petitioner cited that vessels in
marinas or on moorings are subject to dangerous conditions due to wakes created
by high performance boats and yachts traveling at higher rates of speed which
may also cause erosion of the shore. The area has extensive boating traffic
including kayaks, canoes, “crew” boats, small and large sailboats, performance
boats, yachts, barges, and tugs.
The Department will conduct a survey and study of this area during the 2012
boating season. Interested parties are encouraged to provide comment on the
requested regulatory change. Written comments will be accepted until September
7, 2012. You may
