to register online for a free workshop to learn more
about the Watershed
Assistance Collaborative, a partnership between DNR,
Chesapeake Bay Trust, University of Maryland SeaGrant
Extension, Environmental Finance Center, and others that
provide funding and technical assistance for watershed
restoration planning and design.

CCP PROGRAM
SPOTLIGHT: WATERSHED STEWARDS ACADEMY IS
NOW ACCEPTING
APPLICATIONS
CCP Program Spotlight is a
feature of the In the Zone e-mail service that
highlights programs that have been developed by the
Chesapeake & Coastal Program or through partnership
and support from federal, state and local partners
helping to advance coastal management in
Maryland.
The Watershed Stewards
Academy (WSA) is an initiative of Anne Arundel County
Department of Public Works and Arlington Echo Outdoor
Education Center to train community leaders, called
"Master Watershed Stewards," to reduce the negative
impacts of stormwater runoff in Anne Arundel County. The
role of the Master Watershed Stewards is to engage and
educate citizens, businesses and organizations within
sub-watersheds on relevant environmental issues,
undertake projects in
their community and assist the County with identifying
NPS problems that need addressing. This will be the second
year of Master Stewards to be trained in the
Program. The first year the Program trained over 33
stewards with over nine class sessions.
Financial
and technical assistance for the Watershed Stewards
Program is provided by the Chesapeake & Coastal
Program.
WSA
applications will be accepted from August 19 through
September
15, 2009. The course
runs from October 28,
2009 through
late February 2010 with a final class in April 2010.
Informational meetings will be held on August 19,
September 2, or September 9,
2009 at
6:30
p.m. at
Arlington Echo
Outdoor Education
Center in
Millersville,
MD for anyone
interested in learning about the program or applying to
be a Steward. To get an application or if you have
questions, contact Suzanne Kilby Etgen, the Coordinator
for the Watershed Stewards
Academy, at setgen@aacps.org
or call 410.222.3822.

"LIVING
SHORELINES IN ST. MARY'S
COUNTY" HOMEOWNERS WORKSHOP WILL BE HELD ON AUGUST
29
On August 29, 2009, CCP and the Chesapeake Bay
National Estuarine Research Reserve's (CB-NERR) Coastal
Training Program will partner with St. Mary's County to
host its 7th Homeowner's Living Shoreline
workshop. Since 2007, more than 450 local
homeowners have attended these free, County-State
partnership workshops. Homeowners as well as local
business and property owners come to learn about site
designs, local and state regulations and permits, how to
ensure project success and information about the
technical and financial assistance available to
homeowners and communities. Usually held
from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, these workshops have
featured presentations, field visits, or both and
provide opportunities for attendees to ask questions and
learn more about living shorelines. For each
workshop, CCP partners with the counties to develop an
agenda and identify a target audience. From there,
CCP organizes the location, the speakers, the materials,
the invitations and registration - all at no cost to the
County.
For anyone interested in more information about the
workshops, the services provided, or for hosting one in
another county, please contact Catherine McCall or Gwen Shaughnessy with the Department
of Natural
Resources. |
CCP'S WORK ON MARYLAND'S
BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE HIGHLIGHTED IN NOAA'S COASTAL SERVICES
In its May/June 2009 issue of
"Coastal Services," the NOAA Coastal Services Center
featured an article about Green Infrastructure and land
conservation in coastal areas. In the article, CCP
was highlighted as one of the state coastal programs
that is working to incorporate estuarine and marine
aquatic priorities into targeting land for
conservation. The article also highlighted a CCP
project that will get underway in August 2009 - a
Coastal Fellowship project examining how land targeting
efforts might incorporate sea level rise adaptation
considerations. Here is an excerpt from
Coastal Services article: Maryland coastal managers
are expanding an existing statewide green infrastructure
program to better incorporate what they are calling
"blue infrastructure," or aquatic priorities in the
nearshore coastal zone, such as finfish habitat and
submerged aquatic vegetation. "We are creating a
framework to identify coastal habitats and areas where
conservation and restoration activities can be targeted
to maintain and improve coastal resources," says
Catherine McCall, natural resource planner for the
Maryland Chesapeake and Coastal
Program.
