CCP
SPOTLIGHT: FUNDING
AVAILABLE FOR WATERSHED PLANNING AND PROJECT
DESIGN
CCP Spotlight is a feature of the In
the Zone e-mail service that highlights programs that
have been developed by the Chesapeake & Coastal
Program or through partnership and support from federal,
state and local partners helping to advance coastal
management in
Maryland.
The Watershed Assistance Grant
Program welcomes requests
for technical planning, design and financing strategy
activities directly related to watershed restoration and
protection efforts.
view the Request for Proposals.
Special Funding
Opportunity Also Available through Chesapeake Bay Green
Street-Green Jobs Initiative
In addition,
a special funding opportunity for green streets and
other urban green infrastructure projects is now
available. This announcement is soliciting
proposals for urban green infrastructure-driven
technical planning and design assistance associated with
watershed restoration projects. The Chesapeake Bay Green Street-Green Jobs
Initiative supports supports implementation of the
President's Chesapeake Bay Protection and Restoration Executive Order.
The Watershed Assistance Collaborative is a
partnership among Maryland's state agencies, the
Chesapeake Bay Trust, the University of Maryland, NOAA
and EPA. The Collaborative exists to provide
coordinated capacity-building opportunities to local
implementers.
Click here to view the Request for
Proposals. The deadline for
both RFPs is September 24, 2010.
Local
communities interested in learning how the Collaborative
can connect them to the financial and technical
resources they need to undertake comprehensive watershed
restoration projects in Maryland should e-mail Carrie Decker with the Chesapeake
& Coastal Program or call 410-260-8723.

MARYLAND'S
COASTAL ATLAS ROLLS OUT NEW ESTUARIES MAPPING
TOOL
Suite of
Mapping Tools Now Features Ocean, Shorelines
and Estuaries Mappers

CCP has launched the
Estuaries mapping tool, part of the suite of
applications that comprise Maryland's Coastal Atlas. "Estuaries" joins the already live Ocean
and Shorelines mapping tools of the Coastal Atlas that
were launched in June 2010. "Estuaries" allows
users to access information and maps identifying
critical tidal and near-shore aquatic resources and
habitats and their surrounding landscapes to focus
conservation and management activities. The aquatic
resources and habitats available through this tool are
available for both the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal
Bays.
Among the data found in
"Estuaries", the tool delivers the results of the
recently completed Blue Infrastructure Near-shore
Assessment - a detailed spatial
assessment of coastal habitat, critical natural
resources and associated human uses in the tidal waters
and near-shore area of Maryland's coastal zone. This
assessment evaluated and prioritized coastal habitats in
Maryland's Chesapeake and Coastal Bays, tidal waters and
Ocean and is currently being integrated in to coastal
conservation work. One example is the assessment's
application in land acquisition targeting. The map
products will be used to enhance the scope of
information and aquatic resource values considered in
land acquisition in coastal areas. CCP staff will
be on hand at the upcoming Maryland Association of Counties
(MACo) conference in Ocean City
on August 19th to demonstrate the Estuaries mapping tool
to county parks and recreation representatives and to
provide some brief
training.
Maryland's ocean and estuarine
environments today face an era of unprecedented
activity. Wind farms and other energy facilities,
commercial fishing, diverse recreational uses, and
shipping highways are all competing for use and space.
To ensure the protection of Maryland's critical ocean
and estuarine resources, otherwise known as our Blue
Infrastructure, and the coastal economies that depend on
them, the Coastal Atlas has been developed to provide
direct access to available data needed for coastal and
ocean planning efforts.
By providing access to this
data, the Estuaries mapping tool can help coastal
managers and planners identify coastal habitats where
conservation and restoration activities can maintain and
improve coastal resources.

tool.
