Stream Study Activities

Stream study can be done in a variety of ways, looking at different indicators of health and discovering potential sources of water pollution and other pressures on streams. Three common activities include the following, and all are recommended for a complete field investigation:

  1. conducting a biological assessment,

  2. analyzing water chemistry, and

  3. conducting a stream corridor assessment.

Biological, chemical and physical factors can all indicate the quality of the water. Some of the links provided here include more than one of these investigation activities, so they are repeated under each. For some, multiple similar resources are provided to capture additional information or to suit different grade levels or learning styles.
