DNR Recognizes Long-Time Employee by Dedicating Visitor Center
FORT HOWARD, MD — Recognizing that one man can make a difference, Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Secretary C. Ronald Franks today dedicated the North Point State Park Visitor Center to Sparrows Point resident Steve Takos, (pronounced TAY-kohs) who has volunteered countless hours since 1937 to restore many of the structures that existed when the area was home to one of the most popular amusement parks on the Eastern seaboard.
Franks hosted a birthday celebration today for Takos, who turns 80 on Dec. 26; the dedication was part of the celebration.
In its heyday, the area of North Point State Park had meticulously manicured gardens and pathways accenting sprawling grounds, and elegant Edwardian architecture dotting the landscape. For the price of a trolley ride, young and old alike could seek respite from the city’s oppressive summer heat at the park’s saltwater bathing beach, large picnic area and amusement attractions.
Takos’ knowledge of the area along with his priceless photos of the old seaside amusement park were invaluable during the restoration of the fountain and trolley station.
“This time of year it is always nice to recognize the generosity of others, and today, we thank Steve Takos for his countless hours of hard work and dedication to North Point State Park,” Secretary Franks said. “He is an invaluable asset to the state. The beauty one finds at the park in his legacy.”
The State Forest and Park Service has 8,500 registered volunteers; Takos is believed to be the longest serving volunteer in the state. Takos has also been quite busy assisting park staff with cleanup efforts after Tropical Storm Isabel.
The Takos Visitor Center is approximately 6,200 square feet, and was erected in 2002. It is situated in the area of the park where the old Bay Shore Amusement Park used to be, and now serves as an information center for the many visitors who come to the park to walk, fish, and enjoy the wild lands.
