Lifejacket Fashion Show Puts The Spotlight On Summer’s Coolest Accessory
Maryland Beauty queens join DNR Secretary, staff on the “catwalk”

WHO: Mrs. Maryland 2004, Rashidah Taylor, and Miss Teen Maryland 2004, Hannah Freymeyer, will be joined by The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Secretary C. Ronald Franks, Assistant Secretary Mike Slattery, DNR staff and their families for a lifejacket fashion show.

WHAT: DNR and its law enforcement arm, the Natural Resources Police, along with the Boat U.S. Foundation and West Marine, are hosting a fashion show to demonstrate the idea that a lifejacket is, "Summer’s coolest accessory.” Each model will take their turn on the catwalk wearing a different lifejacket and the features and attributes of each will be announced.

This event kicks off National Safe Boating Week and our state’s corresponding week, May 22-28, which highlights the need for boaters to take command of their safety by wearing a life jacket at all times while on the water.

After the fashion show, media can view a vessel safety inspection and take a ride-along in an NRP boat.

WHERE: Sandy Point State Park marina

WHEN: TUESDAY, MAY 18, 11 A.M.

WHY: In the United States in 2002, nearly 70 percent of the boating accident victims drowned, and nearly 85 percent of those drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket. Maryland loses more than a dozen people every year to boating related fatalities, most of which could have been prevented if a lifejacket had been worn.
