DNR Names Natural Resource Police Superintendent

Col. Mark S. Chaney is sworn in by Anne Arundel Circuit Court Robert P. Duckworth, June 1, 2004. ANNAPOLIS, MD — Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Secretary C. Ronald Franks today announced that Col. Mark S. Chaney has been appointed as the Superintendent of the Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) effective June 1, 2004.

Mark Chaney (Steve) comes to the Natural Resource Police after 20 years with the Maryland State Police. His law enforcement career has provided him with a diversity of both field and leadership experience from Barrack Commander to the FBI Warrant Fugitive Task Force. Most recently, Col. Chaney served as Chief, Maryland State Police Operations Bureau, overseeing 2,500 sworn and civilian personnel.

"We're very pleased to have Steve join the DNR team," Franks said. "His leadership and experience lend critical skills in enforcing Maryland's conservation, boating, and hunting laws."

Lt. Col. Tammy Broll, who served as Superintendent, will continue as the Chief of Office of Field Operations of the NRP.

The NRP is the enforcement arm of DNR. NRP provide a variety of services in addition to conservation and boating law enforcement duties throughout the State of Maryland, including search and rescue, emergency medical services, education, information and communications services on a 24/7 basis. All NRP officers are vested with all powers conferred upon police officers of the State, and may exercise these powers anywhere within the State.

The mission statement of the NRP is:
Enforce all natural resources laws of the State including all rules and regulations adopted pursuant to the Natural Resources Article. Assist in the protection of life and property and serve as the primary search and rescue agency on the waters and in the rural areas of the State. Preserve the peace, assist in the prevention of crime, detect and apprehend violators, safeguard individual rights and perform miscellaneous service functions as requested by the citizenry.
