Pipeline Maintenance At Conowingo Will Limit Access To Susquehanna;
Company Will Provide Shuttle Service For Fishermen
BALTIMORE MD – Starting on June 16, 2004, the Colonial Pipeline Company will be conducting maintenance work on a pipeline that runs under the Susquehanna River just downstream of the Conowingo Dam. The project is expected to last for two to five months.
On June 1, 2004, equipment placement and preparatory work will be initiated, and access to Shures Landing Road and the parking lot at the river will be restricted due to the heavy traffic the project will require and because of the limited workspace available.
There will be a significant number of workers and vehicles in the area as well as supplies and materials that will be needed to complete the project. The public parking lot located at the Conowingo Dam will be used as workspace for vehicles, equipment and materials. Exelon employees, contractors, vendors and delivery personnel will have access to their gated parking lot. Residents along Shures Landing Road, their visitors and emergency vehicles, will have access to the homes.Recreational activities will be accommodated to the extent possible. Colonial Pipeline will provide a shuttle bus/van from a nearby parking lot (at the corner of Maryland Route 1 and Shuresville Road) for those wishing to fish from the riverbank at Fishermen’s Park. The shuttle will accommodate fishing equipment and other paraphernalia. The boat ramp at Shures Landing will remain closed from June 1 until the work is finished. Alternate boat ramps are located in Port Deposit Marina Park and at the Susquehanna State Park Lapidum Boat Launch facility.
The nearby recreational trail will remain open. In the interest of public safety, however, the Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway has agreed to close the Fishermen’s Park entrance to the trail. All hikers, bicycle riders and walkers are encouraged to use the Stafford Bridge entrance located near the intersection of Stafford and Craig’s Corner Roads near the Susquehanna State Park.
The shuttle bus will run during the time that Fishermen’s Park is open. Currently, Fishermen’s Park is open from 5 AM to 7 PM, Sunday through Saturday. Questions may be directed to Colonial Pipeline Company at 410-457-5033.
Work will proceed around-the-clock so that it can be completed as soon as possible with minimum disruption to residents and the public.
