Programs for kids offer fun and learning in an outdoor classroom
ANNAPOLIS, MD — The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) maintains a database of fun-filled family events happening in around our State Parks and other managed properties. Hollofield Campfire Program: The Evolution of the Park

Spring Wildflower Hike

Soldiers Delight is home to many rare and unique wildflowers. Join us for a guided hike to find some of the spring wonders of the area. Bringing cameras is encouraged. Picking flowers is prohibited! Preregistration is required.June 13, 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Avalon River of History Tour
Patapsco Valley State Park Visitor Center
Discover the vibrant history of the Patapsco Valley State Park on a four-mile walking tour. See the remains of the Avalon Iron and Nail Works, millrace, Avalon Dam, Orange Grove flour mill, and Civilian Conservation Corps camp. This program is for ages 10 through adult. Animals in Hiding (Preschool Program)

Do animals play hide and seek? Bring your children ages 2 1/2 - 5 to find out through games, a story, and a walk in the woods how and why animals hide from each other. Preregistration is required. Cost is $3 per child.June 19, 1 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Trees and Terrific
Patapsco Valley State Park Orange Grove Area
Take a 3-mile hike across varied terrain, and discover what makes this forest so special. Learn to identify some of the common trees in the upland and floodplain, and learn facts and folklore about the trees you find. Wear sturdy hiking shoes. Bring water, snacks, insect repellant, and sunscreen. Pre-Registration Required. Cost is $3 per person.June 19, 8 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Patapsco Breeding Birds
Patapsco Valley State Park Avalon Area
June is well into the breeding season for the birds of Patapsco Valley State Park. Join a volunteer naturalist for a morning walk to look for birds that are singing on territory, building nests, and feeding their young. Bring your binoculars and field guide to birds. Meet at the Avalon Visitors Center parking lot. The program is for ages 12 through adult. Pre-registration is required. Cost: $3 per person.June 26, 8:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.
What's Bugging You?

National Trails Day
Cunnigham Falls State Park
Join park staff in the Houck Area for a day of giving back to Mother Nature by improving the Cliff Trail. Meet at the Falls Trail head parking lot at 10 a.m. Bring water, and be prepared to work. This event is subject to cancellation in case of inclement weather. Volunteers who pre-register receive free park admission for the day.Howard County

Daniels Canoe Trip

Canoe the Patapsco River in the calm backwater of the Daniels Dam. Look for birds that frequent this riparian habitat. Instruction and equipment are provided for this beginner-level trip. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Paddlers must be age 12 or older. Pre-registration required. Cost is $12 per person.June 26, 9 a.m. – 12 noon
History Tour: The Town of Daniels
Patapsco Valley State Park Daniels Area
Walk along the abandoned Alberton Road to the remains of the C.R. Daniels textiles factory. Hear stories about the people of Daniels and how they lived with the river and still love this place even now that the town is gone. Bring water, snacks, insect repellant, and sunscreen for this 3-mile hike. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $3 per person.St. Mary’s County

Blue and Gray Days
Point Lookout State Park
The program includes Civil War living-history demonstrations concerning military and civilian life at Point Lookout during the War Between the States. No reservations are needed. The program is sponsored by the 20th Main Volunteers.Worcester County

Coastal Cleanup
Assateague State Park
Join Assateague State Park and the Maryland Coastal Bays program for a canoe cleanup of the saltmarsh and shorelines of Assawoman Bay. This event coincides with International Coastal Cleanup Day held in parks and communities throughout the world. Canoes and equipment will be provided but are limited. Those who can bring their own canoes are encouraged to do so.June 12, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
AMSA Fishing Derby: "Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs"
Assateague State Park
Assateague State Park and the Assateague Mobile Sport Fishermen's Association (AMSA) will be co-sponsoring a fishing derby for kids 16 and under. Members from the AMSA will be on hand to instruct participants in proper fishing methods for the surf. Other demonstrations include kite flying, soap carving, casting for accuracy, and surf-rescue demonstrations. Lunch will be provided by AMSA. Limited equipment is available, so please bring equipment when possible.
