Cooperative Flounder Tagging Program Launched
Better Understanding Of Flounder Sought
OCEAN CITY, MD — The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fisheries Service has partnered with the Atlantic Coast chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishermen’s Association (MSSA) to conduct a pilot tagging program for summer flounder in Maryland’s coastal bays and near shore waters of the Atlantic Coast.MSSA volunteer anglers are tagging summer flounder to collect data from recaptured flounder to better understand the movements of these fish in Maryland’s coastal waters, as well as offer information on growth and habitat preference.
DNR is asking anglers to report any recaptured tagged flounder by calling 1-800-688-FINS. The flounder are tagged with bright yellow, spaghetti style tags with a tag and telephone number printed on the tag. As accurately as possible, anglers should record the tag number; length of the fish, and the location of the catch.
