Elk Neck State Park Swimming Area Closed Until Further Notice

NORTH EAST, MD— State Forest and Park Service officials announced early this evening that the public swimming area at Elk Neck State Park will be closed until further notice due to the presence of elevated fecal coliform bacteria levels on the North East River side of the park.

Cecil County Health Department officials tested the water Wednesday; initial results confirmed a positive presence of the bacteria at a higher than acceptable level Thursday morning. A subsequent test was completed to confirm the findings, however as a precautionthe public swimming area was closed Friday pending final test results.

The beach will remain closed until further notice. State Forest and Park Service officials will continue to work with the Cecil County Health Department to test the water, determine the source of the bacteria, and keep the public informed.
