DNR Staff And Volunteers Uncover More Than 300 Species At The 3rd Annual Bioblitz
In New Germany State Park
Number of species found rose 62 % from 2003

GRANTSVILLE – The results are in! Flora and fauna are thriving in New Germany State Park and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has the numbers to prove it. DNR staff representing the Forest and Park Service, Fisheries and Wildlife & Heritage, along with 34 volunteer surveyors conducted a 24-hour species search over Memorial Day weekend in the 400-acre New Germany State Park located in western Maryland. The result was a total of 333 species found, a 62 percent increase over the 205 found last year. The 333 species are comprised of:

“The main reason we conduct the BioBlitz is to give our state park visitors a greater appreciation of the diversity of plant and animal species that can be found in their public lands,” said Eric D. Savage, a park associate at New Germany State Park and the event’s coordinator. “We were so thrilled with this year’s turnout and look forward to next year’s.”

New Germany State Park is the ideal location for the BioBlitz because it is comprised of various ecosystems, including a man-made lake, natural swamp, brook trout stream, stands of mature eastern hemlock and plantations of 50-70 year-old spruce, pine and fir. This diverse habitat supports a wide array of wildlife, including black bears, bobcats, coyote and white-tailed deer.

DNR officials believe there are several reasons for the increase in the number of species found this year including better weather, the date of the event changed from June to May when more birds are migrating and the presence of volunteers dedicated to finding insects. From a fisheries perspective, New Germany State Park is unique because there are species representing coldwater, coolwater, and warmwater fish communities, resulting in 15 species found.

Similar BioBlitz events are held in states across the country including Virginia, Oklahoma, Connecticut, Vermont, Colorado and New York which even conducts a species search in Central Park.

Below is a complete list of the species found.
