DNR Announces Public Events For Aug. 2004
Junior Rangers, summer concerts and Smokey’s 60th birthday highlight Aug. ’s events

ANNAPOLIS— The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) maintains a database of fun-filled family events happening in around our State Parks and other managed properties. Below are August’s main events organized by county. All events are free unless otherwise noted.

Allegany County
Aug. 7, 14, 21 & 28, 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Gathering at the Gap

Rocky Gap State Park, 12500 Pleasant Valley Road
Join in for some family fun at an old-fashioned campfire program with National Park Service Ranger Rita Knox. Ranger Knox will discuss the history and challenges of the C&O Canal. The program will be held in the campground amphitheater. The general public is invited.

Aug. 15, 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Summer Concert

Rocky Gap State Park, 12500 Pleasant Valley Road
Spend a relaxing evening listening to the melodic sounds of the Potomac Concert Band. This free concert will be held on the camp-store lawn. The general public is invited.

Aug. 21, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Annual Campground Cook-Off

Rocky Gap State Park, 12500 Pleasant Valley Road
Share one of your favorite campfire recipes with other campers, and impress the taste buds of the judges. Prizes will be awarded. The event is sponsored by the park's volunteer team.

Frederick County
Aug. 13, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
2004 Trophy Deer Contest

Frederick County Fairgrounds
The 2004 Maryland Trophy Deer Contest recognizes the "top" deer taken in each county during the 2002-2003 deer-hunting season for the Maryland State Record Book. Highest scoring bucks (typical and nontypical) are recognized for each white-tailed deer season (bow, firearm, and muzzleloader). The Boone and Crockett method of scoring is used. A separate category is designated for sika deer. The 2004 Trophy Deer Contest will be held Aug. 13-15 at the Frederick Sports Expo located on the Frederick County Fairgrounds in Frederick. The Maryland Bowhunters Society and the DNR Wildlife & Heritage Service are co-sponsoring this event.

Junior Ranger Project

A Junior Ranger project will be offered for ages 7-15 at the Nature Center Ranger Roundup.

Campfire Program: Wild Edible Treats

A campfire program about wild, edible treats will be held at the Nature Center.

Nature Craft: Animal Tracks

A nature-craft program about animal tracks will be held at the Nature Center. The program is limited to 25 participants.

Earthworm: Friend or Foe?

Rocks State Park, 3318 Rocks Chrome Hill Road
Join naturalists for a story about the importance of the earthworm. Learn how earthworms help the planet stay in balance. Learn how vermicomposters use worms to turn food scraps into nutrient-rich soil. Make a mini-vermicomposter to take home. This program, geared for children entering the fourth through eighth grades, will begin at the Rock Ridge pavilion.

Powwow on the Rocks

Rocks State Park, 3318 Rocks Chrome Hill Road
Rocks State Park will hold a powwow story time. How did the King and Queen Seat get its name? What is the American Indian legend about the King and Queen Seat? Join American Indian specialist Linda Coates to find out the answers. The program will begin near the pavilion in Rock Ridge area. We will then hike to the King and Queen Seat to hear the legend about the area. Park naturalists invite all children, but parents must accompany young children because the enviroment is somewhat hazardous.

Campfire Program: Smokey the Bear's 60th Birthday

Rocks State Park, 3318 Rocks Chrome Hill Road
Celebrate Smokey the Bear’s 60th birthday by attending a presentation given by park naturalists. Smokey will make an appearance, so stop by to celebrate, enjoy cake, and roast marshmallows.

Aug. 10, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Junior Ranger and Park Pal Project

Rocks State Park, 3318 Rocks Chrome Hill Road
Miss Rachel and Miss Amanda would like to invite the Rocks State Park Junior Rangers and Park Pal class of 2004 to return to the park for a backyard-habitat activity. Please meet in the pavilion at Rock Ridge. Work with your friends again. Learn about building backyard habitats to attract animals to your yard.

Campfire Program: Nature’s Unloved Creatures

Rocks State Park, 3318 Rocks Chrome Hill Road
Tina Bianca, park naturalist from Day's Cove, will present a program called Nature’s Unloved Creatures. She will discuss many of the creepy-crawly critters that most people dislike, explaining their places in the food chain and their importance to the environment. After the presentation, please feel free to stay to roast marshmallows on the campfire

Queen Anne’s County
Aug. 14, 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Evening Canoe Trip

Tuckahoe State Park, 13070 Crouse Mill Road
Join our park naturalist staff for an entertaining and educational trip up Tuckahoe Creek. Pre-registration is required. Cost: $8 for adults and $4 for children

Washington County
Aug. 7, 7:30 p.m. – 10 p.m.
From Head to Toe: Dressing a Civil War Era Lady

Greenbrier State Park, 21843 National Pike
Learn all about what a typical lady of the Civil War era would have worn--from undergarments to outerwear. There is more to their clothes than meets the eye. Meet at the Greenbrier State Park Amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. In case of rain, meet at the Visitors Center.

Aug. 14, 7:30 p.m. – 10 p.m.
After the Battle: Candlelight Tour

Gathland State Park, 21843 National Pike
Join living-history reenactors for this exciting event. The tour will include several scenes depicting what the area would have looked like after the Battle of South Mountain, fought here on September 14, 1862. Tours start at 7:30 p.m. and will continue to 10:00 p.m. Cost: $2 per person for those 12 and older


Worcester
Aug. 7, 15 & 22, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Scales & Tales: Sundaes in the Park

Pocomoke River State Park, 3461 Worcester Highway
Join Scales & Tales at Northside Park in Ocean City. See live birds of prey and reptiles up close. Ocean City Parks and Recreation will be providing musical entertainment as well as ice cream to make your own sundae. Cost is $2 per child.

Nature Sprouts: Dragonflies
Pocomoke River State Park, 3461 Worcester Highway
Join the Nature Sprouts! Let your child, aged 3 to 5, experience nature while making new friends. How many dragonflies can you catch? Get an up-close look at the famous mosquito muncher. A snack will be provided. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Preregistration is required. Cost is $2 per child.
