Nineteen Maryland Schoolchildren Ages 7 To 16
Vie For Top Prize In River Of Words® Poetry And Art Contest
Winners will be announced by DNR at the Maryland State Fair Aug. 28
ANNAPOLIS – Nineteen students representing eight of Maryland’s 10 tributaries have been chosen as finalists in contest celebrating River of Words® (ROW), an arts and environmental education program that teaches watershed education through the arts.Awards are given in both the International and State Contests. For the Maryland ROW Contest, a poetry and art finalist will be chosen in age categories K-6 and 7-12 in the 10 Maryland tributary areas of the Chesapeake Bay. A grand prize winner will be chosen for both poetry and art for each of the above age groups and announced on “Natural Resources Day” at the Maryland State Fair on Saturday, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m.
“The Aquatic Resources Education Program at DNR is thrilled to hold the first Maryland River of Words ceremony at the State Fair this year,” said Elena Takaki, the program’s manager. “We received 250 entries from eight out of 10 Tributary Teams which greatly exceeded our expectations. We look forward to having even more entries next year.”
Maryland has a partnership with River of Words® (www.riverofwords.org) through the Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) Program which is run by the Aquatic Resources Education Program the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). There are both an International River of Words Poetry and Art Contest and a State Contest. In order to be eligible for the Maryland contest, students must have first have entered in the International contest.
