Governor Ehrlich Announces BPW Approval of $50,000 in Program Open Space Funds for Washington County
Funds support the expansion of Shafer Park in Boonsboro
ANNAPOLIS, MD — Emphasizing his continuing support for county parks, Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. today announced Board of Public Works approval of $50,000 in Program Open Space funds for additional parkland in Washington County.
“The population in and around Boonsboro has been growing in recent years,” said Governor Ehrlich. “A larger local park meets the increased demand for recreational facilities and improves the municipal environment in a way that only green space can.”
The Board approved $50,000 in Program Open Space funds as the sixth installment towards the purchase of 34 acres to expand Shafer Park in the town of Boonsboro. This acquisition, which borders Potomac Street, is the only available land contiguous with the park, and it will allow the park to accommodate the rapid growth of Boonsboro and southern Washington County.
DNR’s Program Open Space is a nationally recognized program that provides funding for Maryland’s state and local parks and conservation areas. More than 4,600 county and municipal park and conservation projects have been completed through the program, improving the quality of life for millions of Marylanders.
