Wye Oak Descendants Available To The Public
PRESTON -- DNR’s John S. Ayton Tree Nursery has descendants of the Wye Oak on sale for spring delivery. Grown from the acorns of what was formerly Maryland’s state tree, these mature seedlings make perfect gifts for Christmas.Each seedling will be shipped with a certificate of authenticity and a history of Maryland’s Wye Oak. The tree, felled by a thunderstorm on June 6, 2002, and estimated to have been 460 years old, was the largest white oak in the nation and possibly the world. Gift cards will be sent to notify recipients that seedlings will arrive in March and April of 2005.
