NRP Arrests Mechanicsville Man for Drugs, Handgun Possession
Saturday, Sept. 3, William J. Butler, 24, of Mechanicsville, was illegally parked at the entrance to the picnic area of Point Lookout State Park in St. Mary’s County, when he was approached by an NRP officer. The officer detected the aroma of burning marijuana; a search of the vehicle revealed a loaded 9mm handgun under the front seat.
Butler was charged with: two counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), marijuana and crack cocaine; two counts of possession of CDS with intent to distribute; two counts of possession of a firearm while drug trafficking; two counts of possession of CDS paraphernalia with intent to distribute; stealing a handgun; possession of a stolen handgun; possession of a handgun, while in a vehicle traveling and traveling on a road or parking lot generally used by the public; All of these charges are felonies. Butler was released Sunday morning from the St. Mary’s County Detention Center on $75,000 cash bond.
