Be on the Lookout for “Blue Stained Lumber”
Lumber coming out of areas affected by Hurricane Katrina could be carrying "blue stain,” a common discoloration in lumber that is caused by microscopic fungi in the sapwood of trees. The Maryland Forest Service wants Marylanders to know that blue stain does not detract from the strength properties of dimension lumber and that blue stained lumber can be used for exactly the same purpose as non-stained lumber.
