Maryland Natural Resources Police Honor Their Own And Others

WYE MILLS — The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP), the law enforcement arm of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), honored both officers and private citizens from around the state with certificates of merit and appreciation last night. The ceremony also honored those officers who were promoted.

DNR Secretary C. Ronald Franks attended the ceremony along with Deputy Secretary Lynn Buhl, Assistant Secretary Kristin Saunders, NRP Superintendent Col. Mark S. Chaney and former NRP Superintendents Col. Jack T. Taylor, Col. Frank I. Wood and Cmdr. Roy W. Rafter. NRP Capt. Robert Davis was the emcee for the evening and NRP Lt. Joe Offer gave the invocation and benediction.

“Very few of us receive the praise or acknowledgement that we deserve.” Superintendent Chaney said. “Tonight we will do just a little of what we should do everyday of our lives and that is to recognize the special people around us for the special things they do to enrich our lives.”

Corporal Walter May of Westernport received the Boating Safety Officer of the Year Award for efforts towards a safe boating environment on Maryland waters.

Officer First Class Jeffrey Howard of Pocomoke received the Conservation Officer of the Year Award for his efforts toward preserving and protecting Maryland wildlife.

Sergeant Beth McVeigh of Severna Park received the Officer of the Year Award for her efforts toward meeting the missions of the Department and the Agency in an exemplary fashion. Sergeant McVeigh also was the recipient of the Shikar-Safari Club International Wildlife Officer of the Year Award.

The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) is the enforcement arm of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). With an authorized strength of 270 officers and a dedicated staff of civilian and volunteer personnel, the NRP provide a variety of services in addition to conservation and boating law enforcement duties throughout the State of Maryland. These services include homeland security, search and rescue, emergency medical services, education, information and communications services on a round the clock basis. NRP is the only police force aside from the Maryland State Police that has statewide jurisdiction.
