Water Chestnut Eradication Effort Underway
DNR’s efforts to control the spread of water chestnut (Trapa natans) in Maryland continue. Since 1999, the agency staff have patrolled the Sassafras and Bird Rivers and removed all water chestnut plants that could be located. The total harvest has declined from approximately 400,000 pounds in 1999 to just a few hundred pounds between 2004 and 2006. While efforts continue to be needed, the reduction in distribution of this species indicates success. DNR’s goal is to fully eradicate the species 2010. Read more here.
