Maryland Sea Grant Colleges Publishes Comprehensive Crab Book
ANNAPOLIS, MD — The University of Maryland Sea Grant College recently published The Blue Crab, the most comprehensive reference text ever published on any crab species in the world. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) was a prime sponsor of the book.

Victor S. Kennedy of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Sciences Horn Point Laboratory served as the lead editor for the work– and its 750-page companion, The Eastern Oyster.

“The book distills decades of research by many dedicated scientists on this ecologically and economically important species,” says Kennedy. “Our intent was to bring together information useful for managers, decision makers, and other researchers.”

Lead by native Marylander Gene Cronin, the initial charge to garner support for the book -- both financial and intellectual – began nearly a decade ago. A zoologist by education, Cronin was a life-long student of the Chesapeake Bay and other estuaries. He spent most of his professional career working on behalf of the Bay and its living creatures. When he passed in 1998 at age 81, Kennedy continued to carry the banner.

“I remember Gene’s enthusiasm when he came to us with this project back in 1998,” said DNR Secretary John R. Griffin. “Kennedy has done a remarkable job in carrying on Gene’s legacy. This is truly a stunning achievement.”

Cronin's widow, Alice called the book “the culmination of a life's work.”
