McGuire Receives American Society Of Landscape Architects’ Spencer P. Ellis Award
WASHINGTON, DC — The Maryland and Potomac Chapters of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) recently honored Sean McGuire of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Office for a Sustainable Future at their 2007 Awards Banquet.
“As an advocate for the education about our natural environment and implementation of ecological design approaches, McGuire has made an outstanding contribution to environmental policies in the state of Maryland,” said Michelle Kasper, President of the Maryland Chapter of ASLA. “His dedication to this cause absolutely embodies the Maryland ASLA’s commitment to the stewardship of the environment.”
McGuire coordinates the Green Building Network, an outreach effort to unite organizations of similar green building industries and interest. In addition to daily education, outreach, and policy efforts, McGuire secured grant funding and helped implement demonstration projects relating to sensitive landscaping and site design including: a bioretention facility at the Hillsmere Library in Annapolis; a living roof, cistern, and rain garden at Harford Community College; an urban stormwater retrofit in Baltimore City; and natural storm water retrofits in Ocean City. The Office for a Sustainable Future helped to orchestrate several conferences on green building and site design and has worked on several multi-jurisdictional efforts to reduce and return urban areas to pre-development hydrology. McGuire currently resides in Annapolis.
The annual award is dedicated to the memory of Spencer P. Ellis and his service to the environment. Ellis’ career in landscape architecture included work at DNR, where he served as Director of Maryland State Forests and Parks, and the Federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. Each year the Maryland Chapter of ASLA recognizes a person, agency, program, or organization, typically a non-landscape architect, who made a significant contribution to the preservation and conservation of the local environment.
