Governor O’Malley Appoints Bill Goldsborough To Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission
Lifelong Advocate Directs Fisheries Programs at CBF
ANNAPOLIS, MD — Governor Martin O’Malley today announced the appointment of lifelong fisheries advocate Bill Goldsborough to a 3-year term on the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC).
“Bill Goldsborough is one of the region’s most respected fisheries experts,” said Governor O’Malley. “His membership on the Commission will help ensure we continue to manage our precious fishery resources for a sustainable future.”
Goldsborough, who is currently the Fisheries Program Director for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, also serves on the Striped Bass Ad Hoc Committee and chairs the Maryland Artificial Reef Initiative.
Goldsborough fills the vacancy left by Bruno Vasta of Lusby, whose 3-year term expired earlier this year.
“Bruno’s dedication to fisheries conservation, coupled with his experience as a charter boat captain, have helped us effectively manage our resources and strengthen our relationship with the Commission,” said Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary John R. Griffin. “We are grateful for his service.”Recognizing that fish do not adhere to political boundaries, 15 Atlantic coast states joined together to form the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (http://www.asmfc.org/) in 1942. ASMFC coordinates the conservation and management of the States shared near shore fishery resources for sustainable use. Member states include Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Each is represented by three Commissioners: the director for the state’s marine fisheries management agency; a state legislator; and an individual appointed by the governor.
