Ontario Artist, David Yarema, Wins Maryland’s Black Bear Stamp Design Contest

“The detail and beauty seen in Yarema’s and every one of the paintings submitted are reflections of the artists’ passion and appreciate for wildlife,” said Contest Coordinator Doug Wigfield.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) received submissions from 15 artists, including six Marylanders, for the 2008-2009 Black Bear Stamp design contest, some from as far away as Colorado and Georgia. Judging for the contest was held Saturday, March 29, at the 19th Annual Patuxent Wildlife Art Show.

“This was the second year that Yarema, who lives in Mississauga, Ontario, entered the contest,” said Wigfield.

Yarema is self taught and has been painting wildlife for 13 years. His favorite medium is acrylics. Previous stamp wins for Yarema include:

Individuals may purchase a stamp later this summer through DNR’s online store at http://www.dnr.maryland.gov/giftshop/ or at DNR Service Centers across the state. State law requires that proceeds from the sale of Black Bear Stamps and other related items be used to compensate Maryland farmers for black bear damage to beehives, fruit, agricultural crops, livestock and poultry.
