Maryland Natural Resources Police Blotter
Dorchester County – The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) report numerous crabbing violations for the first month of the season.
On Wednesday, April 16, at 10 p.m., NRP charged Lawrence E. Bennett II, 38, of Cambridge for setting crab pots in a restricted area and commercially crabbing during prohibited hours. Bennett was allegedly fishing 65 crab pots in the Honga River near Windmill Point. A court date of May 28 has been scheduled for Bennett in Dorchester County District Court.
On Thursday, April 24, at 5 p.m., NRP charged Howard C. Hughes Jr., 44, of Madison for setting crab pots in a restricted area and failure to mark crab pots. Hughes was allegedly fishing 143 crab pots in the Little Choptank River near Madison Bay. A court date of June 9 has been scheduled for Hughes in Dorchester County District Court.
On Friday, April 25, NRP located and seized 24 unmarked and illegally set crab pots in the Honga River, 10 near Wallace Creek and 14 near Paul Point. On Sunday, May 4, NRP located and seized 21 unmarked and illegally set crab pots in the Honga River near Fishing Creek. No one has been charged for these pots at this time, however, NRP continues their investigation.
NRP reminds commercial and recreational users of the state’s waters to familiarize themselves with laws and regulations pertaining to an activity before they engage in that activity.
Harford County – On Tuesday, April 29, at 5 p.m., a Maryland Natural Resources Police officer was assaulted by a Joppa man while investigating a disturbance.
Aaron Michael Miller, 18, of Joppa was arrested and charged after an incident that started when the officer observed Miller and a female individual walking along the 400 block of Latimer Road. The female individual was crying hysterically and requested assistance from the officer as Miller held her by her arm.
The officer was assaulted by Miller as he assisted the female individual. The officer placed Miller under arrest and was attempting to handcuff him when Miller assaulted the officer again and fled the scene.
Several Harford County Deputy Sheriffs responded to the area and Miller was located and taken into custody at his residence. He was transported to the Harford County Detention Center and charged with assault in the second degree, assault in the second degree on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.
The officer, who is not being identified at this time, was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
