Maryland Natural Resources Police Blotter
The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) report a busy spring bearded turkey season throughout the state.
Allegany County – Wednesday, April 23, the Maryland Natural Resources Police charged Robert K. Crissey, 25, of Cumberland with hunting wild turkey with the aid of bait on private property near Oldtown. A court date of June, 27 has been scheduled for Crissey in Allegany County District Court.
A person may not hunt or attempt to hunt wild turkeys by the aid of baiting, or on or over any baited area. Baiting involves placing, exposing, depositing, distributing or scattering of shelled, shucked or unshucked corn, wheat or other grain, salt, or other feed that would lure, attract, or entice wild turkeys to, on, or over any areas where hunters are attempting to hunt them. The maximum penalty for a person found guilty of this offense is $1,500 for a first time offender.
Dorchester County – Friday, April 18, opening day of the spring bearded turkey season, the Maryland Natural Resources Police charged Tom Stavrou, 73, of Fallston, Konstantinos Sfakianoudis, 41, of Timonium and George Sfakianoudis,
74, of Baltimore with hunting wild turkey with the aid of bait on private property near Linkwood. A court date of June, 9 has been scheduled for the three men in Dorchester County District Court.
Dorchester County – Friday, April 18, the Maryland Natural Resources Police charged Jeffery B. Linthicum, 38, of Woolford and Scott A. Cameron Sr., 40, of Vienna with hunting wild turkey with the aid of bait on private property near Vienna. Cameron was also charged with hunting wild turkeys with a shotgun capable of holding more than three shells.
A person may not hunt forest game, except deer or black bear, with any automatic loading or hand-operated repeating shotgun capable of holding more than three shells, unless the magazine is cut off or plugged with a solid, one-piece filler which cannot be removed from the loading end, so that the gun cannot hold more than three shells in the magazine and chamber combined.
A court date of May 28 has been scheduled for the two men in Dorchester County District Court.
Dorchester County – Saturday, April 19, the Maryland Natural Resources Police charged Barry D. Fisher, 42, of Glenville, Pa. with hunting wild turkey with the aid of bait and failing to field tag a wild turkey before removing from place of kill on private property near Brookview. A court date of June, 9 has been scheduled for Fisher in Dorchester County District Court.
Dorchester County – Saturday, April 19, the Maryland Natural Resources Police charged John Ortega and Charles Ortega, both 51 and of Lititz, Pa. with hunting wild turkey with the aid of bait on private property near Hurlock. A court date of June, 9 has been scheduled for the two men in Dorchester County District Court.
Dorchester County – Saturday, April 19, the Maryland Natural Resources Police charged Howard M. Miller, 62, and Stephen R. Shockley, 30, both of Cambridge and William L. Spicer, 81, of Church Creek with hunting wild turkey with the aid of bait on private property near Cambridge. A court date of June, 9 has been scheduled for the three men in Dorchester County District Court.
Garrett County – Friday, April 18, opening day of the spring bearded turkey season, the Maryland Natural Resources Police charged Mark A. Phillippi, 37, of Markleton, Pa. for exceeding the wild turkey bag limit. Phillippi was found to be in possession of two jake turkeys as officers stopped and checked his hunting licenses on the Meadow Mountain Off-Road Vehicle Trail in Savage River State Forest. A court date of July 24 has been scheduled for Phillippi in Garrett County District Court.
Garrett County – Saturday, April 26, the Maryland Natural Resources Police charged Donald E. Bradley Sr., 68, of Lonaconing and Donald E. Bradley Jr., 30, of Barton with hunting wild turkey with the aid of bait on private property off of Russell Road near Barton. A court date of July 31 has been scheduled for the two men in Garrett County District Court.
Montgomery County – On Friday, April 18, opening day of the spring bearded turkey season, the Maryland Natural Resources Police charged Raymond D. Dufour, 39, of Chevy Chase and Daniel J. Murphy, 35, of Olney with hunting wild turkey with the aid of bait on private property off of Mt. Nebo Road near Poolesville.
Dufour was also charged with hunting wild turkey with illegal ammunition. Dufour was hunting with shotgun shells loaded with shot size number 2. During the spring turkey season a person may only hunt turkeys with a vertical bow or a shotgun with shotgun shells loaded with shot size numbers 4, 5, or 6.
A court date of June, 24 has been scheduled for both men in Montgomery County District Court.
Prince George’s County – Tuesday, April, 15, the Maryland Natural Resources Police investigated a report of an injured wild turkey hen that had been apparently shot with a single pellet and suffered a broken wing bone.
The hen was captured by the Prince George’s County Animal Management Division in the area of Pumphrey Drive in District Heights. The hen was transported by county animal management personnel to the Second Chance Wildlife Center located in Gaithersburg for medical treatment.
On Saturday, May 10, NRP successfully released the rehabilitated hen into the wild at an undisclosed area of the county. (Photograph of officers releasing the hen is available upon request) The investigation remains open however NRP has no suspects at this time.
The Maryland Natural Resources Police encourages citizens to report illegal hunting activities by calling the Catch-a-Poacher 24-Hour Hotline at 1-800-635-6124. The anonymity of the caller is guaranteed.
Somerset County – Saturday, April 12, junior hunt day of the spring bearded turkey season, the Maryland Natural Resources Police charged Wayne E. Waters, 43, of Pasadena with hunting wild turkey with the aid of bait and illegal baiting or feeding of wildlife on Chesapeake Forest Land. Waters was accompanying a youth on the leased property.
Baiting or feeding on designated leased hunting areas is allowed only by written permission from DNR from Sept. 1 through Jan. 31. A court date of July 17 has been scheduled for Waters in Somerset County District Court.
