Wye Island N.R.M.A. Now Accepting Canada Goose Hunting Permit Applications for 2008-2009 Season
Queenstown, Md. — Waterfowl hunters may now apply to participate in the 2008-2009 hunting season at Wye Island Natural Resources Management Area (N.R.M.A.). Migratory AP (Atlantic Population) Canada Goose hunts may occur at Wye Island N.R.M.A. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from Dec. 18, 2008, through Jan. 24, 2009. Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008 and Thursday January 1, 2009, are excluded.
All goose hunting permits will be issued through a lottery drawing. Interested hunters must submit one completed application with a self-addressed stamped envelope by 4:30 p.m., on Oct. 24, 2008 to Wye Island N.R.M.A., 632 Wye Island Road, Queenstown, MD 21658. Permits will be selected by random drawing on Oct. 31, 2008, at 2 p.m. Successful applicants will be notified by mail only.
To receive an application for a permit, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Wye Island N.R.M.A., 632 Wye Island Road, Queenstown, MD 21658. Applications may also be downloaded from the DNR website at http://www.dnr.maryland.gov/wildlife/wyenrmapermit.html. Only one application per hunter will be considered and multiple and incomplete applications will be disqualified.
Anyone selected and all persons participating in the hunt must possess a DNR Managed Hunt Permit, which costs $35.00 and is valid statewide where DNR charges for public hunting access.
Hunting hours will be one half-hour before sunrise until 1:00 p.m. The check-in station opens at 5:30 a.m., with check-in required by 6:30 a.m. After 6:30 a.m., the pit will be re-assigned by lottery. The goose pit or blind will be assigned at the check-in station and hunters must only hunt from their assigned location. Hunters must check-out at the same station by 2:00 p.m.
All Canada Geese harvested at Wye Island are considered part of the daily and season bag limit. Consult the 2008-2009 Guide to Hunting and Trapping in Maryland for details. Hunting parties are limited to four hunters maximum.
DNR reminds hunters to drive and park in posted designated areas only. Hunt permit must be displayed on the vehicle’s dashboard in open view and is valid for one day only. Hand drawn carts, wheelbarrows and skid sleds are permissible. Each hunter will be limited to 15 shotgun shells of the non-toxic shot type only.
Wye Island NRMA has two handicapped accessible waterfowl blinds that were donated to DNR through a Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout projects to enable persons with mobility impairments the opportunity to hunt.
