Governor O’Malley Announces BPW Approval for
Parks and Recreational Projects in Montgomery, Prince George’s Counties
Funding OK’d for Playgrounds in Rockville, Gaithersburg, Germantown and Laurel

Annapolis, Md. — Governor Martin O’Malley today announced Board of Public Works approval of local Program Open Space projects in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, enhancing recreational opportunities and preserving environmentally sensitive land for the use and enjoyment of working families in the Maryland suburbs.

“Through these acquisitions and projects, we are protecting valuable wildlife habitat and preserving the natural beauty of some of our state’s most engaging landscapes, and we are enhancing our parks and recreational facilities in communities throughout Maryland,” Governor O’Malley said.

Montgomery County will receive $304,000, including $160,000 to replace playground equipment at Woodley Gardens Park in Rockville; $44,000 to plant oak, evergreen and flowering trees and other plants in the Music of the World area of South Germantown Recreation Park; and $100,000 for landscaping at the Gaithersburg International Latitude Observatory Park.

Prince George’s County will receive $30,000 for landscaping and fencing to create a dog park area at the Leo E. Wilson Community Park in Laurel.

Since 2007, Governor O'Malley and the BPW have preserved more than 8,807 acres of natural areas for public recreation and watershed and wildlife protection across Maryland.  Since 1969, Program Open Space has provided funding for acquisition of 326,280 acres for open space and recreation areas.  Most Maryland residents live within 15 minutes of an open space or recreational area funded by Program Open Space.

The three-member Board of Public Works, chaired by Governor O’Malley, is comprised of Treasurer Nancy Kopp and Comptroller Peter Franchot. The BPW is authorized by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
