Managed Deer Hunt to Occur at Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area in January
Interested Hunters Must Apply For Permit by Nov. 14
Owings Mills, Md. — The Maryland Department of Natural Resources announced today that a managed deer hunt will be held on the Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area, January 20 to 21, 2009.
“Limited bow hunting occurred on the property for the past two years,” said Karina Stonesifer, Associate Director of Operations for DNR’s Wildlife and Heritage Service. “However, additional deer management measures are needed to further reduce the deer population, which is damaging the rare serpentine ecosystem on the site.”
The two-day shotgun hunt is an effective deer management tool that has been used successfully in Maryland State Parks for almost two decades. The entire Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area will be closed to the public and bow hunting will be suspended during the two-day managed hunt in January.
Hunters will be chosen by lottery. Hunters may obtain an application online at http://www.dnr.maryland.gov/huntersguide/managed.asp.
Lottery applications will also be available at the following locations:Completed applications must be mailed to Gwynnbrook W.M.A. at 3740 Gwynnbrook Avenue in Owings Mills, Md. 21117, and received by November 14, 2008.

- Patapsco State Park Headquarters, 8020 Baltimore National Pike, Ellicott City, Md. 21043 (8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday)
Hunters must have a DNR Managed Hunt Permit to participate in the managed hunt. Accommodations will be provided to hunters with disabilities who are selected in the lottery.
