Assateague State Park And Campground Closing In Advance Of Hurricane Irene

Berlin, Md. (August 25, 2011) - The Maryland Park Service is closing Assateague State Park, including the park’s campground, in preparation for the arrival of Hurricane Irene. The campground will close at 11 a.m. on August 26 and will remain closed until the morning of August 31, depending on the severity of damage caused by the storm. The latest weather forecasts predict a significant impact to Assateague Island from Hurricane Irene.

Campers must vacate the campground by 11 a.m. on Friday, August 26, with all of their equipment and belongings. Full refunds will be automatically processed for all nights the park is closed. Further information can be found at dnr.md.gov/publiclands/eastern/assateague.asp.

The Assateague State Park day-use facility and the road onto the island (Route 611 prior to the Verrazano Bridge) will be closed to all visitors and traffic at 7 p.m. on August 26 and until further notice.
