Sustainable Buildings Industry Council and its Green Building Guidelines – Doug Schroeder, Sustainable Buildings Industry Council

Doug began with an overview of the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC), including the services and products it provides to the construction community. Specifically, Doug described SBIC’s development of green building techniques and reports and disseminating the information. SBIC is a private/Non-Profit Organization established in 1980. They are dedicated to the “whole-building” approach in residential, small commercial, and school design and construction. Doug then highlighted the various partners within the SBIC.

The various green building programs established by SBIC were developed to help advocates get introduced and comfortable with green building techniques. The development of the Green Building Guidelines (Guidelines) was sponsored by DOE, NREC, and other funding sources. Plus, SBIC is going out and helping to sponsor seminars on green building to educate the construction and development community. The Guidelines promote and convey holistic approaches to building design and construction, and do so for people and industries wanting to enter the green building market.

The Guidelines are not a checklist, but rather chapters that address the general factors of green building. The main topics of the Guidelines are energy, resource conservation, indoor air quality, safety, security, and affordability. The Guidelines also provide additional resources for future and specific interest. The Guidelines are climate zone specific and provide market research and data to better secure buy-in and implementation.

Doug then opened the meeting to questions, which included inquiries on security, marketing, and others. For more information on SBIC and the products and services they provide, please check them out at www.sbicouncil.org.
