Fish Species Managed:

(Largemouth Bass, Tiger Muskellunge, Striped Bass, Yellow Perch, Bluegill, Pumpkinseed, Crappie, Rock Bass, Green Sunfish and stocked trout) Piney Reservoir (aka “Piney”) is characterized as a warmwater fishery, although adult hatchery trout are stocking during the spring and fall to provide an additional coldwater fishing opportunity.  Piney is known for its abundant panfish and quality largemouth bass fisheries.  Tiger muskellunge and striped bass are stocked to help improve the size structure of the abundant panfish populations and provide additional angling opportunities.  When the weather allows, Piney Reservoir is also a very popular ice fishing destination.

Special Fishing Regulations:

All gamefish and panfish are managed under statewide regulations. Click here for the current Maryland Guide to Fishing and Crabbing for fishing regulations.

Boating/Access Restrictions:

The entire shoreline of Piney Reservoir is owned by the City of Frostburg and public access for shoreline and ice fishing is permitted. No fishing is permitted along the face of the dam and is posted accordingly.

Boating is not permitted on Piney Reservoir.

Physical/Habitat Description:

Piney Reservoir's surface area is 120 acres with a maximum depth of 35 feet. The upper, shallow end of the lake has heavy growth of aquatic vegetation during the summer months providing habitat for many of the lake's panfish. In the lower half of the impoundment, an area of standing timber creates excellent largemouth bass habitat. Freshwater Fisheries has also placed numerous pine trees at strategic locations to provide fish-holding structures that are accessible to anglers.

History:

Piney Reservoir serves as the domestic water supply for the town of Frostburg, Maryland. A new and larger dam was constructed in 1990 to increase water storage capacity.
