Maryland Department of Natural Resources
Cooperative Blue Crab Data Collection
This pilot program presents an opportunity
for watermen to become directly involved in the management of the Chesapeake
Bay blue crab fishery. We are looking for watermen from around the Maryland Bay
to participate in the assessment of regulatory changes and contribute to the
management of the resource by recording data from their harvest.
The goal is to have commercial crabbers from
different areas of the Bay and segments of the fishery collect data from a
portion of their harvest one day per week.
This will provide information about different gears and differences
between regions.
A maximum of 40 watermen will be accepted
into the program and will be compensated at a rate of $50- $75 per day for the
time needed to collect and record data during the course of a normal fishing
day.
