In order not to overharvest the striped bass stock of the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland utilizes a quota based harvest management system. Harvest monitoring data by gear type is collected using the following methods:

The Secretary of Maryland Department of Natural Resources pursuant to Code of Maryland Regulation 08.02.15.12(H) announces the closure of the 2012 striped bass commercial gill net fishery, effective 12:01 a.m. Thursday, January 19, 2012. The commercial striped bass gill net fishery will re-open Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 3:00 a.m. The daily catch limit will be 300 pounds per striped bass harvest permit with a daily vessel limit of 1200 pounds per vessel. Harvest will be permitted only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during February. The Secretary may, by public notice, subsequently amend season dates and daily landing limits if the quota is projected to be caught.
