The weather is expected to settle down this week after last weekends blow but we may be in for some northeast winds once again on Saturday. Fishermen have been catching flounder in the Main East Channel and in particular from the Route 50 Bridge to the Inlet as the flounder head out the inlet. The National Marine Fisheries Service issued a press release that Maryland has filled its flounder quota for 2008 and the season will close at 12:01am on October 24th.
Fishermen have seen an increase in the quality of the tautog fishing in the Route 50 Bridge/ Inlet area this week. The best fishing has been reported to be at the top and bottom of the tides; sand fleas and pieces of crab have been the chosen baits. At night fishermen have been casting swimming shad lures and Got-Cha plugs for a mix of bluefish, striped bass and sea trout. Fishermen have also been drifting live eels and spot to catch striped bass.
Surf fishermen have been up to their ears in bluefish this week. Most fishermen are using bottom rigs with finger mullet to catch bluefish that average around 14” to 20” in length. A few large striped bass are being caught by fishermen using fresh cut menhaden baits.
The boats headed out to the wreck sites have been catching limits of flounder all the way around the rails lately. The sea bass and tautog fishing has been fair with a lot of sea bass throwbacks. Large bluefish have also been on the prowl below the water lines of the boats fishing the wrecks and making short work of sea bass being reeled in. A number of fishermen have been getting their vengeance by lowering cut baits.
There was not much to report this past weekend offshore as most of the fleet remained tied up at the dock. Reports from late last week told of a few wahoo and bailer dolphin in the canyons.
