Tautog fishing in and around the inlet continues to be good; the throwback ratio is a bit high but there certainly is plenty of action. Fishermen are also dealing with a lot of small sea bass while fishing with sand fleas. The south jetty has been a great place for small boat anglers to fish for tautog, trigger fish and sheepshead. Bluefish have been moving in and out of the inlet by day and night and fishermen are catching them by casting Got-Cha Lures and swim shad type lures. At night, striped bass have been the target of fishermen casting swim shad lures or drifting live spot and eel baits.
Surf fishermen are seeing water temperatures dip to the 68-degree mark. A lot of small bluefish are being caught on finger mullet in the surf and a mix of skates, rays, sharks and a few red drum are being caught and released on larger menhaden or spot baits.
The boats heading out to the wreck sites are trying to make the most of a closed sea bass season with trigger fish and tautog. The trigger fish have been keeping fishermen busy at the rails and they certainly make good eating.
Offshore fishermen continue to slip out to the offshore canyons to troll for a mix of yellowfin tuna, dolphin and white marlin. Recently some of the better fishing has been at the Poormans and Wilmington Canyons.
