It's a Spotted Hake
Type: Chesapeake
Region: Southern
Location: Chesapeake Beach
We caught two of these and unfortunately we only killed one thanks to my 5 year old son Sean. I am guessing it’s a snakehead and after what I am reading now these are bad news. They seemed to be plentiful so I will kill them all next time I catch them. I have never caught one before down here at Chesapeaek Beach and have fished here the past two seasons a lot. More concerning I guess is that these were babies and only 6 inches so I don't know where mom and dad is. We caught them in front of the Rod and Reel at Chesapeake Beach in 25 foot of water on bloodworm.
Correction after further research this is a hake. I never caught one before and many people couldn't tell me what the heck it was until now. I am glad it's not a snakehead so these fish will live on. Also why are these fish here and how come I never caught one before? Everyone that I showed the picture too couldn't tell me what it was so I am guessing they are very uncommon at Chesapeake Beach.
DNR Response:Hello Brian, thanks for the entry. You’re correct – it’s a hake, a Spotted Hake. Sub-adult’s typically venture into bay waters each spring. Here’s additional Angler’s Log entries with hake involved.

My Biggest Fish, a Snakehead
Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Mattawoman Creek
I was fishing on Mattawoman Creek using a LiveTarget scum frog. I caught a good sized Largemouth Bass and a Northern Snakehead. The Snakehead was so large it would not fit in my net so I was forced to paddle with one hand while controlling the fish with the other until I reached land. Biggest fish I have ever landed, 13 lbs. 12 oz. 34 inches long. I love Snakehead fishing!

Lots of Female Snakeheads
Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Potomac River
On Thursday the 9th of May I went bowfishing on the Potomac River for Snakeheads. This time out I saw tons of Snakeheads and they seemed to be spawning. I killed 7 of them. Most were full of eggs but a couple looked like they had just dropped their eggs. I have a question for DNR. Do you find male Snakehead fish with white sperm sacks in them like other fish have when you clean them? I have killed plenty and never seem to find any males, in fact they always seem to be full of eggs.
DNR Response: There are definitely males with testis that produce sperm. The sperm or milt is likely whitish. I know it is difficult to find the testis in a male. Because eggs are more obvious to the naked eye, it's easier to identify a female sometimes.
