We encourage anglers to continue to report snakehead catches. The information is helping our biologists better understand how this invasive species increases its range.

Fishing For Snakehead After The Storm

Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Potomac River

We out to the Potomac River off Chain Bridge trying to spear my first snakehead. Best time to spear snakehead is at night when they come by the rocks near shallow water. My buddy Ung made a custom made on his free time and showed me how it's done back in Laos.

Full Grown Sculpin Not Baby Snakehead

Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: Upper Potomac River

I caught this baby Snakehead in Bloomington, MD in the Potomac River.

DNR Response: Matthew, it's not a snakehead, It's either a Blueridge or Potomac Sculpin. The exact identification is difficult without being able to count fin rays and chin pores. Here is a link to a key to Maryland fishes from Rich Raesly of Frostburg University.

How Long Does it Take to Clean 370 lbs of Snakehead?

Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Potomac River

Dutch and the boys, Franklin Shotwell, Landon Milstead and Eric Hitch here again for our weekend snakehead report. We mopped up the snakeheads this weekend. Saturday night we managed to fill almost to the top 2 - 150 quart coolers with all snakeheads. It was a total of 54 snakeheads weighing in at 370.4 lbs. We fished the Maryland shore line of the river. Started at 9:00pm Saturday and ended at 3:30am Sunday morning. We had a perfect tide with clear water. We also cleaned almost every fish. Took 4 guys 4 hours to clean them.

What's the Snakehead World Record?

Type: Tidal
Region:
Location:

I've kill one more Snakehead, and its numbers came up to 35 inches and 17.5 pounds... I just want to know if we have some kind of state record or something like that...because the previous snakehead that I killed, it was shorter than this, but heavier…I remember it was 18 pounds. If you guys have any information about any state record. I would appreciate it.

DNR Response: Maryland does not have a State Record for Snakeheads. The world record from Japan is set at 17 lbs 4 oz . There was a fish over 18 pounds caught last year but The International Game Fish Association, which keeps the world records, likes to have girth and length measurements for record-breakers, and this wasn’t done. This year, we have heard of an angler catching a 17 pounds 6 oz in Aquia Creek. He is in the process of getting it certified by the International Game Fish Association. If in the future you are certain you have a world record, then he’ll need to have it officially weighed in and contact the World Records Coordinator, Jack Vitek at 954-924-4246 or jvitek@igfa.org. Whether it’s a world record or not, Great Job!

What's Best Way to Catch a Snakehead?

Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Potomac River

I recently went to the Potomac River to catch Snakeheads by the chain bridge and saw a few nice Snakeheads come up for air but didn't catch any, only Bass. I've been told they are aggressive feeders but everyone I spoke to on the water said you need to snag them. Am I wasting time with things like buzz baits? And is it legal to use large treble hooks to snag Snakeheads?

DNR Response: Buzz baits can work too, or most tackle. The anglers log itself is full of great info on catching Snakehead, just search "Snakehead." I've also got a report that summarizes how anglers have had success catching Snakehead. I don't know of any gear restriction for catching Snakehead, as long as its legal tackle. Snagging a Snakehead probably works as well as using a gaff or spear or bow and arrow.
