Northwest MSSA 3rd Annual Kids Fishing Day

Type: Freshwater
Region: North West
Location: Gwynnbrook Pond

Northwest MSSA Chapter No. 4 MARYLAND FISHING CHALLENGE- Youth Component

The Northwest MSSA Chapter No. 4 hosted their 3rd Annual Kids Fishing Day on Saturday, May 19, at Gwynnbrook Pond. Organizer Harvey Riley said they hold this event to teach the kids when they are young so they continue fishing. In order to continue fishing, the MSSA Chapter provides a fishing rod and reel to all kids. It was another perfect weather day for this event, and the fish were biting early including the rainbow trout stocked for the event.

I was there to represent DNR - Fisheries in support of the Youth Component of the Maryland Fishing Challenge featuring Diamond Jim. Joey Stallings was the lucky youth angler randomly selected to move on to the finale on September 8, 2012. The finale is held in conjunction with the Maryland Seafood Festival at Sandy Point Park. Joey will be awarded one of the many fishing trips donated by our partners.

Annual John Carroll Kids Fishing Day

Type: Freshwater
Region: Central
Location: Bel Air

The Annual John Carroll Kids Fishing Day was held on Saturday, May 5, at John Carroll School in Bel Air. Saturday was the perfect day for fishing, a bit overcast and not too hot. Most of the 45 kids present caught fish including rainbow trout (stocked by MD DNR Fisheries Service), bluegill, and an occasional golden shiner. Rachel Ehm was caught by surprise when a 3 lb 12 oz largemouth bass grabbed ahold of the bluegill she was reeling in. This made for an exciting fish tale and landed her a 1st place trophy for the largest fish. The 2nd place winner was Miles Peizynski with a 1 lb 7 oz rainbow trout and 3rd place was Neal Villanueva with a 1lb 4 oz rainbow trout.

I was there to represent DNR-Fisheries in support of the Youth Component of the Maryland Fishing Challenge featuring Diamond Jim. Cole Whisler was the lucky youth angler randomly selected to move on to the finale on September 8, 2012. The finale is held in conjunction with the Maryland Seafood Festival at Sandy Point Park. Cole will be in a special drawing for youth for one of the many fishing trips donated by our partners.

The North East Chapter of CCA hosted the 3rd Annual Yellow Perch Appreciation Day on March 3rd 2012 at North East Park. The forecasted rain held off for the day and by the time the event was over the sun was shinning bright.

Freshwater fish, like all other creatures, are directly influenced by their environment—and that includes everything from the gravitational pull of the moon to how high the sun is in the sky. Days on or near key moon phases can often be prime times to make a catch. - Courtesy of DiscoverBoating.com Website

Hey Kids, now that the Fall Trout stocking has begun, here is a tip to help you catch some trout. Trout like running water, but can be caught in slower moving water as well. Look for eddies around rocks or other debris. Try using a roster tail or panther martin spinner, but hatchery trout can just as easily be caught on powerbait. Check out the link to our stocking updates or call the toll-free number (1-800-688-3467) to find areas that have been stocked.

Bass see better in colder water which is why artificial lures used during the warmer weather months are designed with reflective colors to cause a quick strike action.

NEW REPORT

Kent Island MSSA Youth Fishing Rodeo

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Eastern
Location: Kent Island

The Kent Island Fishermen, MSSA Chapter #7 along with the Kent Island Estates & Romancoke on the Bay Community Associations hosted their 6th annual Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, August 13, at Romancoke Fishing Pier. Although the morning saw a quick rain shower, the rest of the day was perfect for catching fish. Kids were catching plenty of 4-5” rock fish, white perch, needle fish, gar, bluefish and one angler even caught a carp! Many volunteers were on hand to assist the 97 young anglers (ages 3 to 15) get their catch measured in hopes to win one of the selected prizes. Prizes were awarded for the smallest, largest, most, and most unusual fish in age group (3-5, 6-10 and 11-15). All winners received a trophy and a gift. Kids and their parents were also treated to a lunch.

I was there to promote the newly formed Maryland Youth Fishing Club and represent DNR-Fisheries in support of our partnering with MSSA for the Youth Component of the Maryland Fishing Challenge featuring Diamond Jim. Bryanna Lomoriello, age 9, was the lucky angler selected to move on to the finale which will be held in conjunction with the Maryland Seafood Festival on September 10th at Sandy Point Park.
