Essex/Middle River MSSA Kid Fishing Day
Location: Wilson Point Park (Middle River)
The Essex/Middle River MSSA Chapter #3 hosted their 5th annual Kids Fishing Day on Saturday, August 4, at Wilson Point Park (Middle River). The MSSA Chapter provided a new fishing rod to all first timers (50 kids) to this event plus all kids got a “goody” bag stuffed with fishing tackle and educational material. All kids participated in a casting competition and prizes were awarded based on age groups.
Saturday was a scorcher; however that didn’t keep the kids away or the fish from biting. Many volunteers were on hand to assist the 80+ young anglers (ages 3 to 15) with casting, knot tying, and of course baiting and fishing. As soon as the fishing started, the “officials” were hammered with kids waiting to get their catch measured. They were catching some nice white perch, croaker, spot, and several large channel catfish. Joshua Collins was one of the big winners of the day with a 23” catfish. (see photo)
I was there to represent DNR-Fisheries in support of the Youth Component of the Maryland Fishing Challenge featuring Diamond Jim. Michael Peyton, age 9, was randomly selected from the event's many youth registrants to qualify as a youth finalist in the 2012 Maryland Fishing Challenge Finale’ to be held in conjunction with the Maryland Seafood Festival on September 8th at Sandy Point Park. Michael will be awarded one on the many fishing trips donated by our partners.
