Salisbury Shad
Type: Tidal
Region: Eastern
Location: Wicomico River
I was enjoying the day on the Wicomico River in Salisbury between the signs that say "no fishing license required". I am not much of a river fisherman but I think I was getting a lot of hickory shad?? I released them all back to the water safely!
DNR Response: We believe you caught a gizzard (mud) shad, a resident fish of brackish and freshwater waters throughout the tidal rivers of Maryland. Gizzard shad are extremely slimy and not a targeted species for human consumption, they are bottom feeders, hence the nickname mud shad.
