Great Week of Fishing

Type: Freshwater
Region: Central
Location: Middle and Little Patuxent River

The Middle and Little Patuxent have seen some crowds as is tradition after the scheduled stockings but the fishing has been phenomenal! In the Middle Patuxent I released around 5 fish on each of 3 trips on a brown bugger with a size 14 pheasant tail as the dropper. The Murray Hill area of the delayed harvest stretch is not producing trout yet maybe after we get some rain a few fish will make their way down there. On the Little Patuxent I have been successful in catching a few fish here and there over the weekend but today (tues Feb. 26th) was a whole different story with a big catch of 13 rainbows in less than two hours! Two were caught on a panther martin spinner and the next 11 were on the fly rod. I was getting a hit on every other cast regardless of where or how my line hit the water! They were nailing both a #14 scud and a #22 red zebra midge with a tungsten beadhead and wow, I have never had so many big trout on such a small fly but today made me a believer! My largest of the day was around 14 in and fought with every inch of its power in that cold water. I probably would have caught over 20 fish this morning if it wasn't for my midge magically disappearing on a back castů It was about 7-7:30 am and the air temp was 31 degrees. If the fishing continues to be this good I'm going to start going every morning!
