Mid Bay Fishing Report

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Mid Bay
Location: Fishing Creek, The Hill, Poplar Island

Launched at Fishing Creek. Spot were spotty off Holland Point. Finally found some in about 14-15 feet of water but catching was slow. Ran over to the east side of the Hill at Poplar. Boats were set up on the inside edge where fish were marked. Surface conditions were somewhat better there as well. Steady live line bite all morning into the afternoon.

Landed 7 schoolies - 2 keepers - 19.5 and 21.5 in. A larger striper broke off just before we could net it. Hooked a ray about 2-1/2 feet across. Fought it to the boat on 17 lb test line and then cut it off as it still had a lot of steam left in it. Gave the left-handed bait casting rig I use for jigging and live lining a real work out. As a long-time spinning rig user, I find left-handed bait casters much easier to use than right handed rigs. Ran out of live bait around 2. We decided to troll back towards Fishing Creek rather than shift to jigging. Marked a lot of fish along the west side of the Hill and several big bait balls. Landed 4 and lost 1 schoolie in the 12-14 inch range. All bit on tandem rigs with small green head and yellow trailer bucktails at about 25 feet depth. 3 were on my lead core rig back about 180 feet with 5 colors in the water. 2 bit on a tandem back about 120 feet. Didn't mark much on the way back across to Fishing Creek. No pics worth sharing this go round.
