Lower Patuxent Remora

Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Lower Patuxent River

Caught Aug 6, 2013 just off Sandy Point and Chesapeake Bio Lab Pier in the Lower Patuxent River, Solomons, MD on bottom rig with shrimp. Time was about 19:30 and measured the fish around 20 inches.

My fishing partner thought she had a nice big Croaker!

We think it's a Shark Sucker Remora? Do you agree with the identification? Never seen anything like this in the Chesapeake! Once we identified it was not a Northern Snakehead we took a few pics and released it. I donít think it travelled up from the Atlantic on itís own so do you think it hitched a ride on a shark?

DNR Response: It is definitely a Remora and it is not uncommon to find them swimming free by themselves and they will feed on small fish. They are also commonly called shark suckers.
