My Best Bass of the Year

Type: Freshwater
Region: Central
Location: Widewater on the C&O Canal

The C&O Canal is open for fishing and I decided to take advantage of the new opportunity to try for Largemouth Bass. I first went to Swain's Lock and hoped that the weedy cover and logs would hold some fish. I did not get a single bite in spite of trying many places along the 2 mile walk south toward Washington DC. I did not see much activity or any fish in the water. I talked to another angler there and he said the canal appeared to be devoid of fish. I then drove to another place which was Widewater on the canal and had better luck. The fall foliage is at peak and pretty in the late afternoon sun at various places so be sure to bring your camera to take photos. I fished my favorite place and hooked a nice bass on a plastic worm and had him on for a little while before the hook came out. I waited a little while and then put on a big white spinnerbait. As I was retrieving it I snagged the bottom then the snag started to zig zag and pull out line. The big bass put on a stubborn battle diving deep for the bottom but I finally got it in. It weighed about 5 lbs or better. Best fish of the year so far. One photo is of fall foliage at Widewater and other is of my fish which I released.
