Large Snakehead

Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Potomac River

My name is Nathan Franco. My friend Jesse and I were fishing the lower Potomac on 4/13/14, we had a good day. We landed an 8 pound 27 inch snakehead and two bass. We also had a smaller snakehead bite off at the side of the canoe. I also am wondering why there were hundreds if not thousands of dead fish floating on top of the water. I think they were gizzard shad or silver carp. They were everywhere. We netted one to look at and noticed the eyes were all popped out swollen and red. Do they die after spawning? Is it normal for them to die this time of year? Please let me know.

DNR Response: The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) monitors all fish kills in Maryland, we have a link to their web site on our homepage, their phone number is 1-800-285-8195 during the day. This time of year many species are stressed and die just after spawning, always call in fish kills to the number above if you may come upon one while on the water.
