Large Patapsco Largemouth

Type: Freshwater
Region: Central
Location: Patapsco River

Largemouth Bass caught in Patapsco River on June 1st, 2014. Length was 22 inches and girth was 16", we did not weigh the fish but by the weight/girth calculation this fish should be in the 6-1/2 pound range. Caught by Jack Vana of Woodbine, MD.

My family and I have been fishing the Patapsco for over 40 years and between us, we have caught many citation size fish of every species from the typical river fish like carp to the seasonal migrating white and yellow perch but for the last 20 years we have watched the health of the river decline, the water quality especially in the summer is poor and the river has silted in to the point that there are many places that were over 10 feet deep are now impassible in any boat other than a kayak. We can still manage to catch a few bass or small rockfish as well as perch and catfish but not much of anything memorable. Until yesterday! When the fish was first hooked we thought it was a foul-hooked carp, then it jumped, we could not believe what we saw. We knew it was big but when this fish came up at the side of the boat we quickly realized this bass was bigger than any we had ever pulled from these waters.
