4th Time's the Charm

Type: Ocean
Region: Eastern
Location: Route 50 Bridge

Last Sunday evening, July 13th, I fished with minnows for flounder from the jetty at Roosevelt Inlet in Lewes, DE. In three hours I got only two hits and zero hookups. Next I drove to Indian River Inlet and tossed some lures at the shad under the lights of the Coast Guard Station for an hour. Same results: two hits, zero hookups.

Finally, I went to Oceanic Pier at Ocean City Inlet to see if the bluefish were running with the outgoing tide. Not a single hit there during 90 minutes of casting until the current grew too strong. My zero night was pretty much over at 1 a.m. when by chance I pulled my car up to a dock near the Rte. 50 Bridge on my way home. I looked out to find several splashes from fish that were feeding in the still water behind a large catamaran. My spec rig was instantly hooked up with a double of schoolie stripers! I managed three more catch-and-releases (with this one quick self timer photo) in ten minutes before the dock lights went dark and the blitz came to a screeching halt.
